WILMINGTON - Michael (Morton) Freeman passed away on February 14, 2023. Michael was born on February 25, 1938 in Lynn, Massachusetts. He served in the US Navy on the USS Glennon as a radioman after graduating from High School. After an honorable discharge fulfilling his enlistment, he stayed in California and became certified as a hairstylist. He then returned to Massachusetts where he met his future wife, Norma Sandra Kaplan of Lynn, Massachusetts.
In addition to California, Michael was also a certified hairstylist in Massachusetts and later North Carolina and won numerous awards over the course of his profession.
Michael loved fishing from an early age and fished locally in New England and North Carolina where he lived, as well as traveling many times to Russia and Argentina. He also played tennis, bowled, and did compound bow archery competitively over the years.
Michael and Norma were married for 57 years, living in Massachusetts and then moving to Wilmington, North Carolina in 2003. They had two sons: Eric Charles Freeman married to Susanne Marie Stover living in West Bath, Maine and Bradley Alan Freeman married to Susan Freeman with daughter Sydney Jane Freeman living in Knoxville, Tennessee. He is survived by all of them. He is also survived by his sister Phyllis Robinson of Jerusalem, Israel and predeceased by his sister Marilyn Freeman Geller of Brockton, MA.
When Michael moved to Wilmington with Norma in 2003, he was affectionately known as "Yankee Mike". In his semi-retirement, he loved fishing on the Carolina Beach Pier and out at Oak Island. He still cut and styled hair for friends in the area. He was well loved and will be missed by his family and friends.
