Robert “Bob” Movelle, was born Dec. 5, 1948, in Long Branch and passed away peacefully Oct. 11, 2023, from complications of acute myeloid leukemia. Bob grew up in the small town of Fair Haven as the oldest son of the seven children of Dr. John B. Movelle and his wife Betty. Throughout his childhood, Bob absorbed his parents’ love of golf, enjoyment of music, theater, and fun-filled game playing, which he delighted in sharing as a dedicated husband and dad.
If you met Bob, it wouldn’t take long for you to enjoy his presence; he took great joy in making you feel at home, providing a touch of humor at just the right moment and a million quips to go with it. His warm heart, sense of humor and mutual enjoyment of sports, beach life, nature and competitive game playing – not to mention his good looks – won over his wife Barbara. Both his son Sean and daughter Rita were gifted with his same fun-loving, kind heart and (sigh) a passion for the New York Giants. Bob’s annual organization of family fantasy football teams, and NY Giant “predictions,” along with his weekly re-caps filled with way too many stats but always worthwhile jokes and critiques, will be missed.
Bob graduated from Red Bank Catholic High School and St. Vincent’s College in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. He was stationed at Fort Dix during his stint in the Army during the Vietnam War. His personality and smarts carried him through a successful professional life in computer/IT while at Continental Insurance in Neptune and then a move to CNA in Chicago for 19 years, after which he and his wife Barbara found their forever retirement home in Southport, North Carolina.
Bob’s last three years since his diagnosis were filled with wonderful memories of family visits, grandbabies being born (four), keeping up with his investment club pals, Bocce Tuesday buds, bridge games with neighbors, a getaway to Costa Rica, and reminiscing with dear friends from his hometown, high school and college.
Bob was predeceased by his beloved father Dr. John B. Movelle, mother Elizabeth Anne and brother Daniel. He is survived by his wife of 38 years Barbara; son Robert Sean (Sheila) of Naperville, Illinois; daughter Rita Schaefer (Nathaniel) of Indianapolis, Indiana; and four grandchildren, Charlie and Lillian Schaefer and Warner and newborn Mila Movelle. He will also be greatly missed by his siblings, Elizabeth Flynn (Hon. Terence) of Little Silver; John Movelle of Daphne, Alabama; Jeanne Wagner of Rumson; Margaret Movelle (Sue Morong) of Boston, Massachusetts; and Richard Movelle (Mary) of Tinton Falls. He is survived by countless nieces and nephews, and dear family friends, Larry and Kathy Brooks of Sunset Beach, North Carolina.
A future celebration of life and memorial service will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bob’s name to the Wounded Warrior Project at woundedwarriorproject.org or to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society at lls.org.
