It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Edward "Ed" Wales Flagler, who passed away on March 6, 2025, at the age of 83, at his home in Wilmington, NC. Born on May 29, 1941, in Troy, NY, Ed's journey through life was marked by dedication, service, and boundless love for his family and country.

Ed proudly earned his Bachelor's Degree from Jacksonville University, marking a significant milestone in his academic journey. While on spring break in Daytona Beach, he met the love of his life, Diane Wharton. His dedication to service led him to leave college to join the Navy, where he fulfilled his lifelong dream of earning his wings and becoming a Naval Aviator in the United States Navy. Ed served his country with courage and commitment, often sharing stories of his time in the air and aboard aircraft carriers. After the Vietnam War, he returned to Jacksonville University to complete his degree.

Following his distinguished military career, Ed continued his dedication to service as the Postmaster with the United States Postal Service in Castle Hayne, NC, and contributed to the safety of his community through his work with the Wilmington Police Department. His professional life was a testament to his unwavering work ethic and passion for serving others.

Beyond his career, Ed found his greatest joy in the simple yet profound moments spent with his family and beloved Labrador retrievers. He was deeply involved in his children’s sports and cherished every moment with his loved ones. His legacy as a devoted family man will forever inspire those who knew him.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Marion (née Armstrong) Flagler, and his brother-in-law, Donovan Fletcher. He leaves behind a loving family and many friends who will carry forward his spirit of kindness, generosity, and strength. He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Diane Wharton Flagler; his cherished children, Laura Flagler Crowell, Mark William Flagler and wife Terri O’Brien, and Jennifer Anne Flagler; his grandchildren, Edward Watts Crowell, Mason Collins, Morgan Collins, and Saoirse Flagler; and his sister, Suzanne Fletcher, along with many more extended family members and friends who will miss him dearly.
